Program Description

Event Details

In recognition of Women’s History Month, the Galveston & Texas History Center is proud to present a lecture on Mary Moody Northen and her unconventional role as the head of the Moody family’s sprawling billion-dollar business enterprise from 1954 to 1986. Staff archivist Katelyn Landry-Carranza will discuss how Mrs. Northen exceeded societal expectations for American heiresses, and how her position as a business executive and philanthropist starkly contrasted with women’s then-typical roles in corporate workplaces. The lecture will feature newly digitized images of archival materials from Moody Family Papers and Business Records, an archival collection donated to the GTHC by the Mary Moody Northen Endowment in 2023.

The lecture will also be livestreamed on the Rosenberg Library YouTube channel for those who cannot attend in-person. The lecture will be recorded and remain available on YouTube afterward.

The Moody Mansion has generously offered Buy One Get One Free admission tickets for lecture attendees to tour the mansion following the lecture. To redeem this offer, show your lecture registration confirmation email at the Moody Mansion ticket office. Tickets are sold until 4:00 p.m., and the mansion is open until 5:00 p.m.
